Brian recently took the “YWAM driving test” and is now authorized to drive the base Kombi. Since any person who takes the Kombi is responsible for paying for gas, we don’t actually use it to go anywhere, except to make the daily milk runs. Brian took over the job for William, one of the base staff who fetches the milk every day.
All of the milk on the base is provided free by a small farm on the outskirts of Jeffrey’s Bay. The only requirement is that it’s picked up daily after 4pm. Each day, we drive out to the farm with one gallon pails and old water jugs to fill with fresh milk. The farm has around 75-100 cows and what looks like hundreds of acres of farmland. Check out the video on the video bar to the left, anyone in the Benson family won’t notice much of a difference. Everything looks (and smells) the same – this farm even has a compost business.
We also met an American veterinarian who has been living in Israel for the past 20 years and was visiting the farm to purchase heifers for a development project in Algeria. The Kay-Ben Farm participated in a similar project when the state brought dairy cattle and other agricultural goods to Cuba back in 2006.
Way to go Brian! Next step is to strip the cows after machine milking. You just have to love the smell of a cow's warm side.
